Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Leadership styles and student strikes in Public Secondary Schools in Nebbi District, Uganda. The objectives of the study were to assess the relationship between the Autocratic leadership style and student strikes, find out the relationship between the Democratic leadership style and student strikes, and ascertain the relationship between the Laissez-faire leadership style and student strikes in Public Secondary schools in Nebbi district, Uganda. A cross-sectional study design was used. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were adopted with a sample of 341 respondents. A simple random sampling technique was used to select the students, while purposive sampling was used to select the District Education Officer, headteachers, and deputy Headteachers. Quantitative data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages) and inferential statistics (Pearson’s correlation), while qualitative analysis used a thematic approach. Findings revealed an insignificantly very weak positive correlation (r = .1009) between Democratic Leadership styles and Student strikes; a positive correlation (r = .241) between Autocratic leadership styles and student strikes; a moderate positive correlation (r = .16) between Laissez-Faire Leadership styles and student strikes. Thus, it was concluded that Leadership styles contributed to students' strikes in Public secondary schools in Nebbi district, Uganda. It is recommended that the Headteachers in Public Secondary Schools in Nebbi District should focus on the use of a Democratic Leadership style, but not an Autocratic and Laissez-faire leadership style, to curb the student Strikes in Public Secondary Schools in Nebbi District, Uganda.
